Below is Figure 2.1, which shows the family tree of rabbits, where the rabbits exist under these conditions:
(1) You begin with one pair of rabbits which have just been born.
(2) Each rabbit reaches sexual maturity after one month.
(3) The gestation period of a rabbit is one month.
(4) A female rabbit will always give birth to one pair of rabbits.
(5) The life span of a rabbit is four months.

The population for each month can be tallied up horizontally. The first month is at the top and the twelfth month is at the bottom, therefore as time goes on we move downward.
Because the X's represent deceased rabbits, we do NOT include those in the population. We do include ALL the circles, because these represent living rabbits at different ages.
